The peppermint cultivar is believed to have occurred in nature from the hybridization of mint varieties Mentha aquatica and Mentha spicata. The ancient Roman's were some of the first to widely use peppermint and brought it with them to England, where it was commerically planted around the 1750's in Mitchum, Surrey, South London. The English peppermint cultivar was brought to the United States around the 1790's and was known as "Black mint" or "Mitchum mint". Dried peppermint is made up of the following essential oils & aromatic compounds in order of amount; menthol, menthone, menthyl acetate, menthofuran and cineol, as well as small quantities of limonene, pulegone, eucalyptol, caryophyllene and pinene. Menthol activates cold and menthol-sensitive receptors in the skin and mucosal tissues, producing peppermint's trademark cooling feeling, Peppermint has also been said to enhance memory.
